Eco-friendly Gardening

Plants have the potential to tackle climate change as they absorb and store carbon dioxide emissions that are driving global heating. However conventional gardening practices promote soil, water and air pollution because of the chemical-based products used. Organic gardening on the other hand which uses naturally formulated products to grow plants and flowers does not harm the environment. Organic gardening helps to prevent a loss of topsoil, toxic runoff, water pollution, soil contamination, soil poisoning, death of beneficial insects, birds, critters and other beneficial soil organisms, as well as eliminating pesticide, herbicide, and fungicide residues on food from synthetic fertilizers.

Organic Compost and Mediums

Compost is decomposed plant material containing microelements and beneficial microorganisms. Growing media are often formulated from a blend of different raw organic materials to achieve the correct balance of air and water holding capacity for the plants to be grown.

Benefits of Using Compost

  • Using compost is not only a better and sustainable alternative to the chemical-based fertilizing aids but also in building good soil structure and texture for your plants to grow in.

  • It enables the soil to retain nutrients, water, and other microelements.

  • Helps to maintain soil pH, having an acidifying effect on the soil during decomposing of organic matter.

  • It also feeds earthworms and other microbial life in the soil.

In general, it does not matter what kind of soil you have. All soils types can be improved with the addition of compost. Organic fertilizers are safe and contain all the necessary micronutrients needed for optimal plant performance.

Organic Compost by Kekkilä

Kekkilä manufactures compost fertiliser from organic waste. Its products replace fertilisers made from virgin raw materials, giving long-lasting fertilisation and supporting microbial activity in the soil. Kekkilä was founded in 1924 in Finland, abundant with clean natural resources suitable for safe food production.

We are now selling this amazing compost at our Windhoek Lifestyle branch.

Organic Fertilizer

Organic fertilizers comprise a variety of plant-derived materials that range from fresh or dried plant material to animal manures and litters to agricultural by-products. Soil nutrient deficiencies reduce and modify plant growth. The nutrient content of organic fertilizers varies greatly among source materials, and readily biodegradable materials make better nutrient sources. Nitrogen and phosphorus content is lower, often substantially lower, in organic fertilizers compared to chemical fertilizers. Seagro, Nutrisol and Wonder organic fertilizers come in a liquid formulation and we have a proudly Namibian Greenfields granular organic enriched fertilizer range that is specially formulated for Namibian soil conditions.

Benefits of Using Organic Fertilizer

  • They release their nutrients more slowly in the soil when the plants need them, so they last longer.

  • They are less likely to burn the young roots of seedlings. Chemical fertilizers may cause imbalances in macroelements e.g. nitrogen, causing reverse osmoses in the plant roots and could damage roots and plants as well as soil microbes if applied improperly.

  • They enhance soil health by nurturing and not harming the soil microbes namely earthworms and other residue decomposers that help make soil nutrients available to plant hair roots.

Organic Pesticides

Some organic pesticides also kill insects, but mostly keep plant intruders like insects, fungi, and weeds away from harming your plants. The Kirchhoff’s Margaret Roberts Organic pesticides (repellents) contains canola and garlic extract that has the quality to repel insects instead of killing them because they are an integral part of the ecosystem.

Benefits of Using Organic Pesticides

Organic pesticides do not necessarily always kills insects but repels them mostly. Most organic pesticides are also less harmful to fish, birds, pets, micro-organisms, and humans. Comparing to synthetic chemicals that contain poisonous chemicals which is harmful to humans, animals, and beneficial insects e.g. honeybees. In the effort to save our valuable planet and leaving a natural healthy environmental inheritance, this is our responsibility to live and practice in symbiosis with nature, by making use of organic and natural ways of gardening.
