ONCE-OFF LAWN TREATMENT

Tips to ensure your grass is always greener

Again, that time of the year to give your lawn its proper once-off treatment and kick start for the new growing season ahead. This is one of the most important activities for Spring you need to do. The reason for this once off treatment is rather obvious, taking into consideration that most of our lawn areas in our gardens acts as an extension of our outdoor living space. We utilise our lawns not only as a nice to have, but mostly for the purpose of entertainment, playing or simply walking on the lawn to reach other parts of the garden. Such traffic on the lawn causes the surface soil to compact, resulting in poor drainage and little aeration. The lawn eventually starts to suffocate and show poor growing signs like brown, bare patches. This once-off treatment is normally due during the first two weeks of September and may be applied according to two different scenarios. The first one would then be as described in the above paragraph and the second for new lawns which tend to still be a bit uneven, and you would like to get it even off smoothly without have to cause damage while mowing.

The once-off treatment as per the first description

STEP ONE: Mow the lawn before you do the treatment to ensure that the organic material and fertilizer penetrates the surface medium properly.

STEP TWO: Aerate with a garden fork by penetrating the prongs of the fork halfway and slightly pressing down on the handle, lifting the roots without too much disturbance.

STEP THREE: Evenly scatter Bone meal or Superphosphate at a ratio of 90g/m2.

STEP FOUR: Evenly scatter old, decomposed cattle manure over the lawn area and rake into the fork holes with a leaf rake.

STEP FIVE: Water thoroughly for the first two weeks and continue as per normal summer schedule.

Once-off for the uneven lawn surface area:

STEP ONE: Mow the lawn before you do the treatment to ensure that the organic material and fertilizer penetrates the surface medium properly.

STEP TWO: Aerate with a garden fork by penetrating the prongs of the fork halfway and slightly pressing down on the handle, lifting the roots without too much disturbance.

STEP THREE: Evenly scatter Bone meal or Superphosphate @ a ratio of 90g/m2.

STEP FOUR: Evenly scatter commercial lawn dressing over the lawn area and spread evenly not thicker than a 12mm layer.

STEP FIVE: Water thoroughly for the first two weeks and continue as per normal summer schedule.
